present when anyone else actually had a 
conversation. Mostly you listened, let him play this 
tape out that he had in his mind. And of course, it 
was always fascinating. Even when you asked him 
questions you had the feeling that though he 
always seemed to be answering your question, he 
was just going on with the tape. No one I knew ever 
really resented that; we considered it a privilege to 
be present so we could listen and watch the tape 
unwind itself.
